Is There a Difference Between a Dog Kennel and a Dog Crate?

Friday, February 26, 2010
posted by c eothe 12:04 PM

Not really, but to begin with, on this subject, never, never use a dog kennel or crate for punishment. There have been many questions about the difference between a dog kennel and a dog crate.  There is no difference between dog kennels or dog crates, except that dog kennels are usually constructed with wire that can be disassembled on all sides, and will lay flat for storage.  Because of this type of construction, they are well ventilated, and your dog can enjoy the sights around them to keep in touch.  A cover of some kind could be placed over the top to hang down a bit for privacy, but don’t cover the entire kennel. There are steel framed crates with fabric covers that can be included as additional décor in your home.  What fun it would be to cover the kennel with some wild colored material, or pictures of doggies playing.  Kennels can also be plastic and attractive and are of different sizes.  They should only be used for short  periods of time because of their size.  Traveling with one of these is handy, especially if your pet is rather small.  Making visits for checkups to the veterinary’s clinic is so much easier with small pet kennels.  These small kennels can be used for your kitty too. Years ago out in the wild, dogs would make a den of some sort for their protection and comfort.  It is not any different today because if you have ever noticed, sometime your dog may lie under a table, under a stairway, perhaps even under a chair where they feel safe.  My dog lays under the coffee table much of the time himself, which is funny to watch because he is a large dog.  The best part is him getting back out from under the table.  That is a sight to see.

It is a natural instinct for dogs to keep their area clean.  Their mother taught this to them.  Wearing breakaway dog collars should be considered when your dog is in their kennel or crate.  They could accidentally strangle themselves.  Things happen when we least expect, so keep that in mind to protect your dog. Choose a location for the dog’s kennel where they can enjoy the activities around them.  In addition, you may want to have an extra one that can be placed in the bedroom during the night.  They will feel close and secure knowing their pet family is close by.  Dog kennels can be used inside or outside in your back yard, especially if they are larger than what you want to put  in your home.  Be Happy!

A Dog’s Lifespan Could Last As Long As 20 Years

Keeping your dog on a healthy diet, giving them plenty of exercise, water, shelter, and an over abundance of love and care, could possibly lead to a longer life span than expected.  Some dogs live 10 years, and if proper care gertie-010was given, maybe 15 years, but living past 15 years is an exception and indicates how well you took care of your pet. Noticing any behavioral changes in your dog’s everyday activities is important, because your dog cannot tell you how they feel.  Observation is the key.  Eating habits may show there is a problem along with weight gain or loss, and the food they eat can cause health concerns, depending on what kind of food you give them.  Take notice to the dog food you give your dog because the lack of nutrition is evident in many brands of food.  Too much sodium, fillers with high percentage of grains like wheat, corn, and soy increase additional bulk into dog food, but nothing geared toward nutrition for your dog that is of concern in living a long and happy life.  We, as humans, know how important it is in taking care of our bodies by eating the right food, exercising …. So there is no difference in a pet parent taking care of their beloved pet, is there?

Many dogs as they age start having health problems and is a hard experience to accept when moving around is hard for them, especially when getting up and down from lying in their dog kennel.  I’m sure your dog has their own kennel that is their special beds11place of comfort, this is why pet kennels are wonderful to have. If your dog is having difficulty in moving around, then you might want to think about preparing a special dog bed for them as time progresses toward disability.  Taking care of your dog is about the most rewarding feeling, knowing you have done your best for them.  Be Happy!

If You Are In a Pinch, Consider Pet Sitters

If you are planning a trip, will you take your pet with you?  Going on a vacation sometimes does not warrant taking them along.  If it is a tilde_retroflowerbusiness trip, you would not take your pet with you anyway, but vacations or visiting friends and relatives, may be different.  There are several choices you can make remembering the welfare of your dog. If you decide to drive or fly will help you make up your mind to the correct decision. Another thing to keep in mind is if you really want to take your them along with you, then certain preparations will need to be made.  Another thought is a pet sitter, or will you have a friend or neighbor watch over them for you in your absence?  Will this be the first time you have taken your pet to a kennel, or left them with someone else?  Separation from one another is sometime difficult, and may be hard on them.  The perfect solution would be having someone you trust to stay and take care of them in your home.

I have personally had an experience several times visiting relatives out of town, and had a woman that sat with pets in addition to her regular job.  She was not what you would call a professional pet sitter, but she was certainly good at what she did.  After leaving her job at the end of the workday, she would come to my home, feed my dog, take him out for walks, and if there were medications that were necessary, she would do that too.  She stayed overnight every day that I was gone, and only asked for a few items to be available in the refrigerator for her.  She took care of my plants and did other things that were necessary to maintain an uninterrupted household.  42548014_10164188Before leaving my home to go to work, she made sure my dog was in his dog kennel.  If you decide to call upon a family member, a friend, or a neighbor, insist on paying them for their help.  They may not want to accept any monetary offer, but usually people do much better jobs if they are paid.  (See Part 1 for more into)

Would You Adopt a Mistreated Dog?

Sunday, January 17, 2010

There are so many dogs out there that have been mistreated to the point of disgust to any animal lover that cares about the well being of a pet.  This goes for dogs and cats alike, and some of the horror stories you hear on TV and in local newspapers is enough to break your heart.  Dogs that have been charlie_starved_dogmistreated will be shy, and withdrawn to anyone that tries to help them, and this is to be expected.  The mistreatment is not only physical, but mental abuse as well, which is not always detected.  If you feel that bringing such a dog into your home is something you truly want to do, you have an enormous amount of patience in coping with unforeseen situations that could cause emotional problems within the adopted pet family.  Some abused dogs do not want to be hugged or petted by their perspective pet parents, and may not understand the caring and loving because of past experiences in their abuse.  Trust is something that is between the pet parent and the pet.

Special need dogs will require more time than perhaps you can give them, so consider the impact after bringing your adopted pet home how their reactions may be.  Be as gentle as you possibly can, and if you have a job that requires long periods of time in leaving them by themselves, or have dog_crate_side_door_gold_picture_home_pagechildren that require a lot of your attention, this also may be a factor.  A dog kennel will be useful in preparing the special need dog for their safety, when left alone. This may become their very own comfort level in learning to accept and trust their new pet parents. Don’t forget a blanket, treats, and some toys.  When all is accomplished in giving this special dog back their mental and physical heath, gratification, and a heart-warming experience will fill your heart forever. Puppy Training Should Start Immediately

We’ve just read about choosing a new puppy, and deciding on the breed and the size of a dog that would fit well into your family household.  When you really think about it, all puppies are adorable, cuddly, smell sweet, and will absolutely steal your heart. So whatever your choice is, you will be anxious to take the new puppy to their new home.  They will be inquisitive to the new surroundings, and may get so excited that they have an accident in relieving themselves.  This is a natural behavior and will soon become part of the past, once their training is completed.  The most important thing to remember is not to react to this behavior in a negative 5579way.  Calmly tell the puppy “Nooo,” and immediately take them outdoors.  This will become a routine, and the puppy will learn that the outdoors is the place to go, not in the home.  Remember this adorable little creature is now in a completely difference environment, and most likely will be stressful at first.

A pet kennel was suggested and is a good source in potty training.   Dog crates are equal to an indoor kennel and will serve the purpose for providing a comfortable place for the puppy to call their own.  Pet kennels life-stages-dog-cratesand pet crates come in metal, wood, different shapes, sizes, and available in various fabrics to fit the puppy’s needs, and is effective in training your puppy to stay in one place upon command.  Training takes love and patience, and if done properly with constant force of commands in obedience, will gradually come into place.  The new pet parent will be so proud of their achievement in teaching their new pet to obey commands, and will be welcome in becoming part of the family.  Your new friend will be happier knowing that their behavior is acceptable.   Be Happy!

Happy New Year to All Pet Parents and Potential Pet Parents

Now that the New Year is here, the possibility of bringing a new puppy into your home has been a subject that you and your family have discussed.  There are many responsibilities involved and everyone in the family must take some part in taking care of the new arrival. The size of the dog to be, and what breed would most suit the family, should be the first priority in choosing a puppy. Each and every dog has their own personality just like humans, and to match those personalities would be wonderful, but may also be impossible.  In choosing a dog, you and the puppy must have a feel for each other, simply by spending some time getting acquainted with one Recoveryanother.  Usually this doesn’t take long, because emotions start to set in, especially with the pet parent to be.  Be cautious on choosing a shy or scared puppy.  They may be difficult to train, but again you never know.  Guess you just have to play it by ear.  Pet kennels are effective to start the training procedures, once the choice has been made.

Be sure and consider visiting some of your local animal shelters to see what’s available.  They have mixed and pure-bred dogs, and usually can offer guidance in your decision.  Poodles make good pets to a pet parent that has a loving, emotional, sensitive, funny, and an outgoing personality.  Border Collies tend to fit best into the family that is successful, sensitive, aggressive, loving with an abundance of emotional feelings, as well as charming.  A person who is funny, successful, loving and very emotional, outgoing, artistic, aggressive,  creative, and charming, would do well in taking a Golden Retriever home.  German Shepherds love to be around a pet parent who is artistic, outgoing, charming, funny, creative, aggressive, and successful. Labrador Retrievers are similar to the German Shepherds, but doggyface2there sensitive and emotional personalities are very strong as well.  Then we have those adorable Pugs.  Creativity has to stand out in this breed, just look at that face, they are sensitive and loving.  Creative pet parents are so versatile; they can get along with many breeds, and make a wonderful companion to their new friend.  Be Happy!

Oh dear, we can hardly wait for Santa to visit. He must be getting close christmas-dog-catbecause our little hearts are beating happily with excitement. We decided we better stand in front of our fireplace for awhile, and make sure there’s not a fire going, so Santa will be safe. We must remind our pet parents not to forget to put out cookies and milk for Santa. Doggy and Kitty think they did a good job, don’t you? One more thing was added to our Christmas list if Santa can’t bring us a new pet safety harness.  He could surprise us with a new dog kennel. One for doggy, and one for kitty.

We would like to thank everyone who has kept up with the blogs that have been written about us in keeping safe, and will continue to be a good doggy and kitty in entertaining you.

Dog Barking – Don’t Get A Dog

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

There was an article in last week’s local paper of a man taping the mouth closed on his 4-month-old Beagle puppy because it wouldn’t stop barking and chewing things up in his apartment. The puppy suffocated, which is enough to make a pet lover sick to their stomach. What’s wrong with this world of ours?  There is a reason for everything.  Dogs do what they think they are suppose to do, and if a human wants to have a dog, they need to know that there is love, patience, and training involved.  If they don’t know that, don’t get a dog.  I know that some dogs bark more than others, but punishment is definitely not the answer. When barking starts for dog-barking-212x300no reason, then that’s when you must be firm in correcting this so called habit, but in correcting the dog from barking you must be there when it occurs, otherwise the pet parent will be unsuccessful. There is also a possibility that genetics are involved, which is why some dogs bark more than others.

Dogs that want attention will bark  to communicate with the world as if to say, “OK, here I am you lucky people.” Being bored or lonely, will allow the dog to protest against them being left along during the day if the pet parent works. Barking can also be a notification of someone that is intruding and by barking, is their warning Military Working Dogssign. Some pet parents prefer getting involved with training by using dog crates or dog kennels during the day, and have found it to be very successful. Turn the radio on, dogs love music and it helps them to feel that they are not alone.  Always tell your dog that they are a “good boy, or a good girl” when they do something right.  Everyone loves that compliment, even our best friend.  Be Happy!

Crate Train Your Dog

Sunday, December 6, 2009

Crate training should start at puppy-hood,  and when it was advisable to do so.  They will learn to enter their crate and stay inside with the door closed, and wait for their pet parent to open the door. This will work out very well, and before long that they will go in by themselves for peace and quiet. Dog crates  also referred to as dog kennels, come in different styles, dog_in_crate_2colors, and sizes, and can be used to the pet parent’s advantage as well as the pet. They love to have a place of comfort to come and go as they want.  Never use the dog crate to punish or to keep your dog out of the way. This is not what this is all about. Training your dog in using a crate is a useful tool if the pet parent is away. Training for this purpose is important in keeping your dog safe and helps to avoid getting into trouble.

Crate training should be done gradually, not push them inside, close the door, and leave. This will never work out to either one’s satisfaction. The door doesn’t have to be closed all the time that the pet in inside. Place a treat in the crate for them, or even set their food bowl inside. This should not be done all of the time, but to help your dog in knowing their crate is not a bad thing. Potty training by using the dog crate is really a wonderful idea, because they won’t go standardden_400x378potty in their area of comfort. If you want your dog to sleep in their crate at night, close the door, give them a treat and open it up in the morning. Immediately take them outside to do their thing, and once they understand, you and your dog will be at ease and have a happy relationship. Be Happy!
