Hip Dysplasia – Heartache for Pet Parents
Hip dysplasia is an awful health problem for many different breeds of dogs, especially large ones. They are not born with it, but it does affect some pure bred dogs, and as puppies, problems will sometime start to affect the puppies at
an early age. When purchasing a large-bred dog, make sure that documentation is provided from the seller assuring that the parents and grandparents were certified as good, and has excellent hips. Several generations should be documented to help you decide if this puppy will survive this disease. This may seem to be an extreme request, but if the pet parent is not aware of hip problems in previous generations, heart break could occur later in your dog’s life. This makes it very difficult for a dog to continue with the life style that they were accustom to, in having a healthy and happy life, but their activity decreases because of their pain.
Hip dysplasia can lead to sever immobility and could possibly cause paralysis. When a dog is suffering from hip dysplasia, the front part of their body and their muscles used to move them around are still very strong, which sometimes leads them to over do in playing with their pet family. A wonderful product is available in helping dogs move around
comfortably, when the loss of their hind legs can no longer continue to function. Dog wheelchairs are becoming popular for this medical problem. If your dog is normal in other ways, you don’t want to think about the alternative. Just like humans that can no longer walk, but can still survive for many years in a wheelchair. Have you ever seen a dog in a wheelchair? It’s absolutely amazing how they conform to this situation in enabling them to move around and continue to be happy. Even running is a wonderful sight. Before making any decisions on a wheelchair for your dog, check with your vet in offering his/her opinion if physical therapy of some kind would be
beneficial and if so, do they feel this would help, and for how long. Most likely will depend on how successful the physical therapy is in rehabilitation for your dog. If therapy works, wonderful, if not then the pet parent should proceed with their choices. Be aware of dependency on your dog’s adjustment. The dog wheelchair may overcome the dog’s desire to recover on their own. Pet parents dearly love their dogs and want to do everything possible to help them live as close to a normal life in proximity to what their normal life was before. Depression can occur within your dog as time goes by not being able to indulge in the family activity as before, and honestly, I believe the pet parents will miss the togetherness as well.
