It Just Does Something to Your Heart, Seeing a Dog in a Wheelchair
Every time I see a picture or video of a dog in their wheelchair, I just cannot believe what I am seeing. That is just the way it is, seeing disabled dogs 
running, catching a ball, going into the water at a beach, or just relaxing, gives my heart a happy feeling. Dog wheelchairs enabled dogs to move around differently, but at least they are able to walk and enjoy life. Sometimes, bad things happen to limit the dog’s ability to move their legs. An accident, surgery to remove a leg, illness, disease, or was run over by an automobile, a dog can still live a good and happy life with the help of a product that will help them maneuver their mobility. It would not be like what they were accustomed to before, but something that could allow them to participate in their pet families activities. Years ago, before you ever heard of a dog wheelchair the only alternative was to euthanize them. The development of assistive devices for dogs is wonderful for the dog and their pet parent. Some of the dog wheelchairs are lightweight and will fold flat so taking your dog with you, as you once did, can still be a pleasure. Wireless Dog Fence
Before I submit an article on wireless dog fences, I wanted to share an article just received on dog poisoning. There have been three other deaths reported due to poisoning in the Spokane, Washington area recently and now another one just reported. A fast acting poison that is used in pest management is similar to strychnine. If a pet parent suspects poisoning, it has been advised to inject a water and hydrogen peroxide solution into the dog’s throat to cause vomiting. I hope that this will save your dog if this happens to you.
Now, to the wireless dog fence - most cities have a dog leash policy to control dogs running loose and doing things in your neighbor’s yard that they should not be doing. This can cause an unfriendly situation between you the pet parent, and your neighbor. If your dog has a fenced yard, you 
will not have to worry about the whereabouts of your dog, or if you live in a restricted area that does not allow fenced yards. A wireless dog fence is your answer. They are less expensive compared to having a traditional fence built, and leaves an appearance of not having a fence that takes away the beauty of your home. A wireless dog can be placed in boundaries that you decide upon, such as keeping your dog out of your garden, flower beds, entrance to your front door, or wherever you want to control their running and playing, or just relaxing watching the traffic go by. This is an awesome way of control and takes little time in the installation. However, you must keep in mind that a wireless dog fence will not work if your ground is hilly or you have many trees in your area. Not only can a wireless dog fence be used around the perimeter of your yard, but can be used inside your home as well. Another way you can utilize a wireless fence is if you are going for an outing, you can take the wireless dog fence along and plug the control into your vehicles cigarette lighter, even into your boat, (do not forget their dog life jacket) if you are a boat enthusiasts. Wild Animals and Dog Doors
An article in our local TV news and local paper reported an incident involving pet doors that turned out to be very scary, but interesting and informative. I wanted to share this information because of an article posted March 5, 2010 (Does Doggie Doors Take Away Togetherness?) Living away from the hassle of busy cities, some 
choose to live in the suburbs of large cities for peace and quiet. However, some areas away from large cities may have wild life wandering around looking for food or water…. pets included. The population of individuals living in these areas most likely do not think about the unusual circumstance that could possibly occur dealing with wild animals. Something unpleasant or undesirable could happen and no one would be prepared of the possible outcome.
A pet family having several dogs installed a pet door for convenience purposes and worked well for everyone concerned. One day last week two of the dogs were out in the back yard which was fenced, playing around when a young male mountain lion came up to the fenced yard. The dogs started barking trying to scare the wild animal away, but the mountain lion jumped the fence and started after the two dogs. The dogs run back through their pet door trying to get away from the lion, but guess what, the lion went in after them. The woman of the house was in the area that the lion came into 
and she ran into another room with an additional dog. No phone was available, so she quickly ran into the room where the lion was distracted by the two dogs, grabbed the phone and went back into the other room closing the door behind her. She telephone her husband and 911. The husband hurried home and was able to lead his wife and dog out of the house just as the animal control, police… arrived. The mountain lion was tranquilized and removed, but not before killing one of the dogs, and injuring the other. After examining the lion, it was euthanized due to extreme malnutrition. I am not telling you about this terrible experience to scare or to suggest the pet parent into not installing dog doors, on the contray, but only to inform you that things do happen. This was of course an isolated occurrence, and an inconceivable situation to encounter, but I thought it would be worthwhile mentioning to understand that sometime things happen in our daily lives that will leave a mark, never to be forgotten. Use of Dog Life Vests Are Necessary
How could a dog life vest be a handy tool for a dog that has arthritis? Labradors and Golden Retrievers are susceptible to arthritis as well as other large breeds, and watching them suffer from this painful non-curable disease 
is a terrible experience. There are medications that help to relieve their extreme pain, but in addition to the medication, there is also something that pet parents can do for their pet to help strengthen their weary bodies, and alleviate their pain. Take them swimming during the warmer months; it would be too cold during winter unless you have an indoor pool. Some people do have one for year around exercise, and it is especially good for humans that suffer with arthritis. There is proof that not only will swimming help humans, but dogs as well who have the same type of disease. The benefits of swimming will not only increase their strength, but helps to lubricate their joints that will lessen their pain. Dogs that have hip dysplasia will benefit as well to this type of exercise, and will help to alleviate some of these painful health problems.
Most dogs love to swim, some are good swimmers and others are not, especially if the dog is older, but never allow your dog to enter any body of water without a certain accessory that could save their life. Dog life vests help them to stay afloat, and make it easier for them to exercise their limbs even when in pain. If your dog loves to go boat riding with their pet parents, not only do they wear life vests so must your dog. There is always a chance that they will become tired, and older dogs could overexert themselves. Most all dogs are natural swimmers, but some breeds do not have the body fat as other breeds and are most likely not 
concerned about going into water. Dog life vests are different sizes and colors to meet the needs of your dog. Very bright colors are great in keeping track of where your dog is in the water. Consider the occasion when taking your dog swimming. If there are other dogs around, excitement could arise and distract your dog if they have not been socialized. This could become a situation you do not want to experience. These are my thoughts, but remember if you are out in the water, become tired and need help, you can scream or holler, but your dog cannot. Be Happy!
Does Doggie Doors Take Away Togetherness?
Sometime in every dog’s life, independence is special and rewarding. When you have to go, you have to go, right? Well I can understand when pet 
parents work and leave their dog alone; they have the choice of going in and out of their dog doors when necessary and do not have to wait for their family to come home. This is a good thing. However, what about if the pet parent is home most of the time and the dog has to go outside? The look in the doggie’s eyes and gestures they make letting them know it is time to go out and smell the roses, is priceless. The pet parent has to stop doing whatever it was they were doing, open the door and let the dog out. Shortly thereafter, there is a slight ‘woof’ letting them know it is time to come back inside. Once again, the parent has to stop doing what it is they were doing, and let the dog back in. Is this a routine or what? Doggies sure know how to train their pet parent with just a slight command, (you did not know Doggies know how to give a command to their parents, did you?) This is togetherness!
As time goes on and the pet parent becomes wise to what is actually going on, decides it is time to install a dog door for convenience to everyone. Dog doors are great to have, and this way they will not be bothered with activities they enjoy in their home, and doggie can do their thing all by themselves. What a relief that will be, no more back and forth, opening and closing the door at doggies command. This is all fine and dandy, but be prepared to know the correct size of the doggie doors opening so moving 
through the door will be plenty of room to go back and forth. Also, keep in mind that if the dog door has not been installed in a safe area, security may then become a problem. It has been reported that burglar’s may become aware of the door and when no one is at home, bingo, in they crawl (if large door), and when you return home, you will discover a burglary has taken place. To safe guard this from happening, make sure your dog is aware of any foreign entry, other than themselves. It is usually true that dogs can detect danger and want to protect their surroundings. Pick a safe and perhaps an area protected by natural surroundings. Be Happy!
A Pet Safety Harness is Two-Fold
Dogs love to go for walks in the park or anywhere their pet parent is willing to take them, but if your dog is large and starts to walk you, rather than you walk them, there is a problem. They can pull very hard and will not allow 
the ease of taking a stroll together. There are different types and sizes of pet safety harnesses that are suitable for just about any activity. A pet safety harness should be used to fasten your dog to the seat belt in your vehicle (some vehicles do not accommodate this feature), and will protect them from getting hurt if the brakes are suddenly applied to avoid having an accident. If you are a runner and take your dog with you, a pet safety harness is ideal. It will work as well for your dog, while riding a bicycle. The pet safety harness is becoming very popular and takes away the stress of trying to calm your dog down while walking. They want to rule, forgetting you are in control, not them. It may take a few times for your dog to become use to their harness, but once they do, you both will be happy.
In addition to this type of pet safety harness, a special one is available to support a senior dog that has had surgery of some kind, or is losing their mobility in walking due to arthritis or hip dysplasia. As dogs become a senior, they will start having pain in their legs, joints, and hips. If you have had your dog for a long time, you will begin to notice the difference of them trying to get up and down, or start to have a slight limp. This is the time to 
take them to your veterinarian and find out what the problem is before it gets too far-gone and nothing can be done to help them. Trying to walk up and down stairs will become a very big problem, as is with getting in and out of your vehicle, I know from experience. Special harnesses are available just for that purpose to help them maneuver 
easier with less pain. The special harness is designed not to bunch up like a towel and will brace your dog. Place the harness under their groin (can also be placed under the front legs depending on the problem) and lifting up will support their weight to move a little more freely. Try not to place the harness under your dog’s mid-section, their abdominal organs are sensitive. Your dog needs to use their own legs to walk with your support. Be Happy!
Protect Your Pet With a Safety Collar
Terrible accidents can happen to our wonderful pets by not being cognizant involving their pet collars. Pet collars are for pet outings, and walks with their pet parent, or around the house. Identification tags are 
attached to the pet’s collar with medical information, pet’s name, name of pet parent and telephone number. Some tags contain their veterinarian’s name and phone number as well. If your pet were to get lost, the necessary information would be on their collar for locating their pet parent with information to notify them where to find their pet. Pet collars should not be too tight around their neck, and you should be able to put two fingers between the collar and the dog’s neck.
However, there should be precautions taken if your pet has their own kennel and/or crate. This is their place of sanctuary but accidents can happen. Accidents have happened to pets that were in there kennel and/or crate and strangled themselves. Trying to turn around in their quarters that are too small is a dangerous situation. The size should be measured according to the size of your dog. Their tags or collars can hook on something and cannot get loose. This is not something you as a pet parent want to see. Pet parents need to be aware of such a problem, so a dog safety collar, especially a dog breakaway collar should be part of their accessories. It is not such a big deal to have several collars anyway. Use the breakaway collar when they are in 
there kennel/crate, or even wear it around the home, just in case. Dog breakaway collars are affordable and could avoid a catastrophe, but these types of collars are not be used to socialize your dog or out for a walk. They may become excited over other dogs or even sometime humans and break away. Dogs can detect danger. Depending on the surroundings where they play or wherever you feel comfortable will relieve the pet parent from worrying about the safety of their dog. Seems as though there are precautions on everything these days, so by using the correct dog safety collar at the appropriate times, your pet will be safe. One other thing to consider is if your dog’s eyesight is not as good, a lighted collar is sure handy for walking your dog at night, and vehicles will be aware of you and your dog. Be Happy!
Your Tiny Pet Will Love a Pet Sling
I know all of you have at some time or another seen mothers carrying their small babies in something that looks like a pouch hanging around their neck. Well there is a product for small pets called a pet sling, sometimes referred to as a pet carrier. Taking our 
precious ones wherever we go is natural in bonding and feels good to have them close. Pet slings come in a variety of colors and are for doggies that weigh 25 pounds or less. Pet slings are easy to use and allows the pet parent to have their hands free to take care of other tasks. Some slings allow you to carry your pet in several different positions for additional comfort. There are also different ways to use the sling, sometime on your shoulders as if you would carry a shoulder bag, or around your neck. This type of sling may not be appropriate for anyone that may have back problems, but there is a pet carrier that distributes your pet’s weight across both of your shoulders and back, providing back support. Traveling with your pet and carrying them in a sling is stylish and pleasing to the eye. Some airports allow the use of frontal pet carriers walking through terminals, but only until you are ready to board the plane. Your hands would be free to carry your luggage along with the pet carrier, but before you do this, check with the airport. It will still be a requirement to put them back into their pet carrier so you can slip your pet under your seat. This type of travel is causing many conversational concerns with other passengers having allergies to pets.
Pet slings work well with pets that are disabled and have arthritis problems, missing a limb, heart disease, or diabetes. This situation requires special needs and the pet sling will offer the loving and caring that a pet parent can 
give to their disabled pet. They will be able to accompany their pet parents in going for walks, shop with them, or just doing daily activities, and still be able to enjoy the nourishment and stimulation outdoors and indoors snuggled close to their parent. Never use the pet sling as a car seat, or a bicycle seat, and do not wear the sling if traveling in a motorized vehicle, bicycle, scooter, skateboard or any similar activity. Stop Pet Allergy in Flight
Allergies toward pets are common among individuals whether they have pets or not. Pet parents that do have allergies, control this problem through medications, and with their continuous love, will care for their pets. To travel in a vehicle within close proximity of one another is accepted by the pet parent, because they know what to do to control their health problems. However, traveling in an airplane among passengers who may be allergic to pets is another problem. Most commercial airlines avoid serving peanuts as a precaution to people who suffer from reactions that can become severe by inhaling peanut dust in re-circulated air in the airline cabin. Some airlines 
approve a carry on pet carrier that will slide under the pet parents’ passenger seat if the pet is small, but what if the pet is larger. The answer to that is the cargo and baggage department, which could be detrimental to their health. Climate control is not that important in those areas, therefore the temperature can fluctuate, but will still remain pressurized. Stress can overcome a pet during their flight and can become scared and cause sickness. It is estimated that one in ten people are allergic to animals and will cause complications during their flight.
Avoiding all of these problems and concerns, fly your pet on a pet only airline in the main cabin, not in cargo. To insure a safe and comfortable flight a trained pet attendant is constantly monitoring your pet in a well lighted and climate control atmosphere. There will be no need to purchase a pet carrier because the pet airlines will provide a carrier free of charge.
