Preparation for Pets Before Disasters Occur

I have been fortunate in not experiencing disasters of any kind, and have never lived in areas where hurricanes, fires, floods, tornadoes . . .  But there dog_in_flood_bw2are many others who have witnessed tragedies involving their communities, friends, and last, but not least, Pets. If you live in areas that have potential concerns of possible disasters, would you have prepared for evacuations ahead of time for supplies that would be needed during this terrible experience? Before any warnings of possible disasters, thoughts should be directed to what is needed, for whom it is needed, and precautions should be taken in knowing what to do for you, your family, and your pets. Preparing for the family can sometime bypass your pets’ needs. I recently read an article a lady wrote about preparation for pets before disasters occur,  and has had numerous experiences on evacuations, offering suggestions to share:

  • Have a collapsible crate big enough for the size of your pet to travel comfortably in, but not too large. Most evacuations create heavy and congested traffic which could take hours in getting to your destination of safety. This can cause extreme anxiety. Helpful suggestion for your pet’s anxiety would be a sedative from your vet to take along just in case.
  • shoppinglistMake a list and fill a small carry-on case with everything from food, water, medication, chew toys, cover for crate, wee wee pads, bowls for food and water, a sweater, a bath towel, and vaccination papers. Make sure you have your pet insurance policy in the carry-on, just in case. (Part 1 will be available soon) Be Happy!
